Hotel Mont-Blanc, Chamonix: A Town-Centre Five-Star Since 1849

[ 17.09.2026 ]

Some Alpine hotels are built around a ski lift. Hôtel Mont-Blanc belongs to a town. It has stood just off the main street of Chamonix since 1849: a white façade dressed in balconies, blue shutters, and an outdoor pool that stays heated through the winter.

From the rooms, the hotel says, you see the Drus rising behind a fir forest on one side and the Bossons glacier at the foot of Mont Blanc on the other. Out of the front door you are in Chamonix itself, within walking distance of the Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers train.

History and interiors

A hotel since 1849

The hotel tells its own story with some relish, and it hangs on a handful of dates.

The story in brief

  • 1849 — by the hotel’s account, the house rises
  • Belle Époque — aristocratic families come to Chamonix to discover skiing, snowshoeing and the bobsleigh
  • 1924 — Chamonix hosts the first Winter Olympic Games
  • Today — one of the flagship properties of the H8 Invest group

Its press kit calls Chamonix the very first international mountain resort. Inside, the interior designer Sybille de Margerie has renovated the whole house, and the hotel lists the ingredients itself:

  • Savoyard-inspired woodwork
  • a black-and-white chequerboard marble floor
  • bespoke furniture and bright touches of colour
  • a monumental staircase with wrought ironwork, and around it the lounges where families and friends gather after a day on the mountain

Être, bien plus que paraître.

To be, far more than to appear. The hotel’s own line on Chamonix.

41 rooms and suites

Which room to choose

Eighteen of the forty-one rooms are junior suites, and with the two duplexes and the Penthouse, just over half the house is suites. Sizes run from about 20 to 100 square metres.

Air conditioning

A separate Prestige category on a lower floor has it, and most rooms here do not. Its view, the hotel admits, is partly screened by trees.

If the view matters

Ask for one of the nine Mont-Blanc junior suites: each has a balcony facing the mountain the hotel is named after. The two duplex suites on the top floor share that view and add a second bedroom, a second bathroom, a private sauna and a balcony of their own.

Restaurant and bar

Le Matafan, under a glass roof

The restaurant sits beneath a glass roof, with the Mont Blanc massif in view. It takes its name from the matafan, the potato galette that, in the hotel’s words, beats hunger. Chef Mickey Bourdillat cooks with the seasons, and his menu travels through the Alps, the Aosta Valley and on to the Mediterranean.

“A cuisine that returns to the essentials: refined, flavourful, and always with a nod to the local gastronomy.”

Mickey Bourdillat, chef at Le Matafan

Good to know

  • Le Matafan is open every day for lunch and dinner
  • The hotel’s winter press kit singles out a Fontina fondue with local chanterelles and a féra from Lake Geneva with braised endives
  • The lounge bar keeps a fine selection of champagnes and wines and serves food at any time of day
  • Live music in the bar every Saturday evening

Spa by Clarins

Swimming in January

Outdoors, a 14-metre pool faces the Mont Blanc massif and is kept at 28 °C in July and January alike.

In the spa

  • A 14-metre outdoor pool and a whirlpool
  • A 250 m² Spa by Clarins
  • A hammam, a sauna and an experience shower
  • A fitness room
  • Clarins treatments for face and body

Children and booking

Children are welcome in the pool with an adult; the sauna and hammam are for guests aged sixteen and over. Hotel guests can use the spa without booking, though the hotel suggests reserving at busy times.

Skiing, honestly

In town, not on the slope

Hôtel Mont-Blanc is not ski-in, ski-out, and says so plainly: the slopes are about three minutes away by car. Here is what it takes on instead:

What the hotel does for skiers

  • A free shuttle from the hotel to the ski areas
  • In winter, a private van, included in the stay, to take you anywhere in the ski area on request
  • A locker of your own in the ski room for every room
  • Skis from the Sanglard shop in town, delivered to the hotel and collected on your last day
  • ESF lessons booked by the concierge, and ski passes prepared at reception

Who it suits

For some the short drive is the cost of the address. For others it is the whole idea: the skiing ends, and you come back to a town with streets and shops rather than to the bottom of a piste.
