Most people know St. Moritz in one register only: February, frozen lake, horses on the ice, the season at full volume. That version is real. It is also the least private time to be here.

The Engadin in late summer runs on a different logic.

By the end of August the valley sits at the height of its natural season — alpine produce at its peak, the lakes still warm enough to swim, light that holds late over the Corvatsch. The palace hotels are open, their kitchens fully staffed, and the calendar between late August and mid-October is built around a handful of events precise enough to structure a stay around.

The decision to move the Gourmet Festival out of winter, after three decades, is not a scheduling detail. It is a statement about when the Engadin actually eats best.

Late August is when alpine produce is at its height — herbs, game, lake fish, mountain dairy — and the invited kitchens are built around exactly that.

Worth knowing this season:

• The Opening Kitchen Party at Badrutt’s Palace, tasting through the working kitchens rather than a set menu
• Emmanuel Pilon bringing the three-star language of Le Louis XV to an alpine summer
• The closing Garden Party on the Suvretta House lawns, with live stations from every visiting chef

Outside the festival week, the palace kitchens and their cellars run throughout the season — and a table is far easier to hold in September than in February.

The Mountains Are Still Open

The cable cars run well past the end of high season, which keeps the Engadin’s highest terrain within easy reach long after the summer crowds have gone.

• Corvatsch cable car — running until 16 October 2026
• Corviglia and Piz Nair — open until 18 October 2026
• Muottas Muragl — open until 25 October 2026, with an autumn special to 1 November

One practical note for this season: the St. Moritz–Chantarella–Corviglia funicular is closed through summer 2026 for a major overhaul. Piz Nair remains fully accessible via the Signal cable car, the shuttle bus, and the Piz Nair line — a detail worth arranging around rather than discovering on the day.
