Cortina d’Ampezzo lies at 1,224 m in a broad basin in the Veneto Dolomites, ringed by the Tofane, Cristallo, Faloria and Sorapis. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and hosts them again in 2026, as part of Milano-Cortina.
How to get there: Venice and Treviso are the nearest airports, with Innsbruck over the Brenner. There is no railway station in Cortina itself; the approach is by road up the Boite valley.
Slopes and lifts: 120 km of pistes on 66 runs with 26 lifts, and 95 % of the terrain covered by snowmaking. A ten-seater gondola from Son dei Prade in the Tofane sector to Bai de Dones at the foot of the Cinque Torri joined two halves of the area that used to need a bus between them.
The wider pass: Cortina is one of twelve areas on the Dolomiti Superski pass, which covers more than 1,200 km of slopes.
What the skiing is like: the Dolomites give this place its shape — vertical rock walls straight above wide, sunny pistes. The skiing is mostly intermediate, and the setting does a lot of the work.
Where you stay: Cortina is a town with a pedestrian main street, and the hotels sit in it rather than on the snow, so a shuttle or a short drive to the lifts is normal.
