Arosa sits at about 1,775 m at the end of the Schanfigg valley, in Graubünden, reached by a narrow-gauge railway that climbs from Chur through nearly a hundred bends. Since the Urdenbahn cable car opened, Arosa and Lenzerheide have been one ski area rather than two.
How to get there: the Rhätische Bahn runs from Chur to Arosa in about an hour, and Chur connects to the main Swiss network. Zurich is the nearest airport.
Slopes and lifts: Arosa Lenzerheide covers 225 km of pistes with 43 lifts, reaching 2,865 m. The Urdenbahn crosses the ridge between the two halves, so the whole area works on one pass.
What the skiing is like: open, treeless terrain above the village on the Arosa side and longer wooded runs on the Lenzerheide side — two different characters on the same ticket, which is what the marketing means by two hearts and one ski area.
Where you stay: Arosa is a resort village strung along a small lake, with hotels close to the lifts and a railway station in the middle of it, so arriving without a car is straightforward.
