Andermatt sits at 1,437 m in the canton of Uri, in the Urseren valley where four Alpine passes meet. For most of its history it was a garrison village and a staging post; the ski area it anchors today is the largest connected one in central Switzerland.
How to get there: Andermatt has its own railway station, served by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and the Glacier Express. Zurich is the nearest major airport.
Slopes and lifts: Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis covers 180 km of slopes with 33 lifts, reaching around 3,000 m. The Sedrun–Cuolm da Vi gondola, opened in 2019, joined the Andermatt-Sedrun and Disentis areas into one.
The Gemsstock: the mountain above the village is the serious end of the area — deep snow, steep pitches and an altitude difference of 1,521 m from top to bottom. This is what brings freeriders to Andermatt rather than the piste count.
Season: mid-November to mid or late April.
Where you stay: the old village and the newer resort quarter sit side by side, so accommodation ranges from village guesthouses to purpose-built hotels and apartments, most of them within walking distance of a lift.
