Saas-Fee stands at 1,800 m on a plateau in the Valais, ringed by thirteen peaks above 4,000 m. The village is car-free, and the glaciers come down almost to its edge, which is why it is one of the few places in the Alps where you can ski in August.
How to get there: the nearest railway station is Visp, with a postbus up the Saas valley. Geneva and Zurich are the nearest airports. Cars stay in the car park at the village entrance.
Slopes and lifts: 150 km of pistes and 22 lifts between 1,500 m and 3,600 m, on and around the Allalin, Hohlaub and Fee glaciers.
Mittelallalin: the Metro Alpin, the highest underground funicular in the world, climbs inside the mountain to 3,500 m, where there is a revolving restaurant — the highest of its kind. From there one of the longest runs in the Alps drops 9 km and 1,800 m of vertical straight into the village.
Summer skiing: the glacier stays open through the summer.
Where you stay: the village is compact and walkable, with hotels and apartments among the old timber barns rather than in blocks on the slope.
