Courchevel Village, long known as Courchevel 1550, sits at 1,550 m. It is one of the six villages of the commune of Courchevel, in Savoie. The official site calls it the simple, functional one, chosen for its calm, its everyday local life and its straightforward access to the slopes.
How to get there: Chambéry 95 km (about 1 hr 15), Grenoble 125 km (about 1 hr 35), Lyon–Saint-Exupéry 176 km (about 2 hrs), Geneva 179 km (about 2 hrs). From the railway station at Moûtiers the drive takes roughly 30 minutes. Free shuttles link the village to the other five, so a car is not needed once you have arrived.
Slopes and lifts: the Grangettes gondola runs from the village up to Courchevel 1850 and stays open into the evening, which puts both the ski area and the restaurants above within reach without driving. Courchevel has 150 km of marked slopes, connected into the 600 km of Les 3 Vallées, which spans 1,300 m to 3,230 m with 85 % of its terrain above 1,800 m. La Saulire, the crossing into the Méribel valley, is a short way further up.
Cross-country skiing: more than 50 km of free marked and groomed Nordic trails across the Courchevel villages.
For beginners and children: ESF Courchevel Village, on rue des Rois, teaches from age 3 in its Piou Piou club and runs group, freestyle, competition and private lessons. The Village des Enfants, the ESF childcare centre with a nursery from 18 months, is up at Courchevel 1850, one gondola ride away.
Activities: a 2 km toboggan run drops from Courchevel 1850, below the arrival station of the Praz gondola, through the forest to the foot of the Grangettes gondola in Courchevel Village. It is lit from end to end and open until 7.15 pm. Access is free with a valid ski or pedestrian pass; helmets and sleds with brakes are required, children under 6 are not allowed and those aged 6 to 14 ride with an adult. Aquamotion, the aqua-leisure centre for the whole commune, is at Courchevel Moriond, on the shuttle route.
Where you stay: the village is known for hotels, residences and apartments at more ordinary prices than the ones higher up. Across the six villages Courchevel counts seventeen 5-star hotels and three Palaces.
