La Plagne is eleven separate sites rather than a single resort: Plagne Centre, Plagne Villages, Plagne Bellecôte, Plagne Soleil, Belle Plagne, Plagne 1800, Aime-La Plagne and Plagne Aime 2000 up on the mountain, and Montchavin, Les Coches, Montalbert and Champagny-en-Vanoise in the valley below. The ski area runs from 1,250 m to 3,250 m.
How to get there: the nearest railway station is Aime-La Plagne, with Bourg-Saint-Maurice further up the line. The nearest airports are Geneva, Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, Chambéry and Grenoble.
Slopes and lifts: 225 km of runs in La Plagne itself, topping out at the Bellecôte glacier. Because the villages sit at such different heights, the same lift pass covers pine forest at 1,250 m and glacier skiing above 3,000 m.
Paradiski: the wider pass extends to 425 km and 258 runs over three linked resorts, with two glaciers and 70 % of the terrain above 2,000 m. The Vanoise Express cable car crosses to Les Arcs in four minutes, 380 m above the Ponturin valley, over a span of 1,824 m.
Where you stay: the high villages are built on the slope and are mostly ski-in, ski-out; the lower ones — Montchavin, Les Coches, Montalbert, Champagny — are older settlements with a quieter feel and a gondola or chairlift into the area.
