Flaine was founded in 1968 and now it consists of several quarters: Flaine Front de Neige 1500m, Flaine Forum 1600 m, Flaine Forêt 1700 m, Flaine Montsoleil 1750 m et le Hameau de Flaine 1800 m. The resort was designed by French architect Marcel Breuer. He is a famous creator of many buildings around the world, such as UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and Whitney Museum in New York. The ski resort is often called a “concrete monster in the mountains”, as its centre consists of 68 concrete buildings. Later they became cultural sites and now are protected by the state. Here you can see sculpture "La Tête de Femme" by Pablo Picasso, as well as monumental works of art by Jean Dubuffet and Victor Vasarely.
Ski pistes, slopes, lifts: Flaine is one of the five ski stationsof Grand Massif ski region: Morillon, Samoёns, Les Carroz d’Arâches, Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval. It is a total of 265 km of pistes with well organized link between all the resorts. The blue piste “Cascade” is the longest one. It is 14 km long.
There are tracks for cross-country skiing.
How to get: Flaine is about 80 km (1 and a half hour by bus) away from Geneva Airport.
Activities: There is the freestyle park “JamPark Pro” for snowboarders at Flaine resort. It is equipped to all modern standards and offers 1.5-km boardercross course, rails, tables, and a half-pipe.There are two other less difficult parks for Grand Massif visitors. In Morillon the park is for children and in Samoen there is one suitable for average level of training. The resort also offers such specials, as marked routes for snowshoeing, paragliding, heli-skiing, snowkiting, ice driving school, buggy safari on ice, snowmobiles, dog sledding, horse riding, mountaineering, and ice climbing.
Après-ski: There are 15 bars and restaurants (6 of them are on the slopes), a bowling and a nightclub at the resort. Here one can also find a great choice of sports shops, several supermarkets and souvenir shops.
For children: Flaine presents itself as a family resort. There are a kindergarten, children’s play club and ski school with individual and group classes. As usual, during school holidays in the evenings resort staff arranges fun relay races, discos and games for little skiers.
