Courchevel Moriond, long known as Courchevel 1650, sits at 1,650 m on a south-facing balcony above the valley. It is one of the six villages of the commune of Courchevel, in Savoie, and the official site describes it as the accessible, easy-going one: lively around the bars and restaurants without being loud.
How to get there: Chambéry 95 km (about 1 hr 15), Grenoble 125 km (about 1 hr 35), Lyon–Saint-Exupéry 176 km (about 2 hrs), Geneva 179 km (about 2 hrs). From the railway station at Moûtiers the drive takes roughly 30 minutes. Free shuttles link Moriond to the other five villages, so a car is not needed once you have arrived.
Slopes and lifts: the Ariondaz gondola runs from the village into the ski area and the Signal chairlift serves the forest runs above it. Courchevel has 150 km of marked slopes, and they connect into the 600 km of Les 3 Vallées, which spans 1,300 m to 3,230 m with 85 % of its terrain above 1,800 m.
Cross-country skiing: more than 50 km of free marked and groomed Nordic trails across the Courchevel villages.
For beginners and children: the Western Ski Park, above the village off the Ariondaz gondola, is a protected learning area on a gentle south-facing slope with two magic carpets, a tepee, archery and face-painting. Two more fun zones sit in the same sector: Le Canyon Yepa, a children’s course of slaloms, boxes and arches, and the Natural Canyon, a route through spruce forest off the Signal chairlift. ESF Courchevel Moriond teaches from age 3 in its Club Piou Piou.
Activities: Moriond Racing is a 3 km toboggan run with eight tunnels and a double-snake section, reached by the Ariondaz gondola and floodlit for evening descents. Riders must be at least 8 years old and 1.10 m tall; between 1.10 m and 1.25 m a child rides with an adult. Aquamotion, the aqua-leisure centre for the whole commune, is here in Moriond, with six zones: aqua-fun, wellness, spa, indoor surfing, climbing and fitness.
Where you stay: Moriond is a village of hotels, residences and apartments, many of them on the snow or a short walk from the lifts. Across the six villages Courchevel counts seventeen 5-star hotels and three Palaces.
