Peisey-Vallandry is two small villages that run into one another on the edge of Paradiski: Vallandry at 1,600 m and Plan-Peisey at 1,650 m. It is the quiet corner of a very large ski area — the lifts are the same, the queues are not.
How to get there: Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the nearest railway station, with TGV services from Paris and onward connections. Geneva, Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, Chambéry and Grenoble are the nearest airports.
Slopes and lifts: the Les Arcs / Peisey-Vallandry area holds 200 km of runs and 54 lifts between 1,200 m and 3,250 m — 126 runs in all: 3 green, 63 blue, 43 red and 17 black. The lift pass extends to the 425 km of Paradiski.
The Vanoise Express: the cable car to La Plagne leaves from Peisey, so this is the crossing point of the whole area rather than an outpost of it.
What the skiing is like: the runs down to the villages are wooded, which is worth knowing when the weather closes in higher up. The balance of the area is weighted towards blue and red, which suits improving skiers better than experts.
Where you stay: chalets and apartments rather than hotel blocks, spread between the two villages, with the lifts at walking distance from most of them.
